65 of 98

The number of state legislative houses controlled by Republicans is now at least 65 out of a total of 98.  (Nebraska has a non-partisan legislature and is not included in this calculation.)  That number could even go higher as the final returns come in.

This is extraordinary.  Two thirds of the state legislative chambers across America have Republican majorities.  One would have to go back to the 1920's to find anything similar to this situation.  Last night, the GOP picked up at least six additional majorities in these chambers.

In the memory of essentially every American, state legislatures have been the precincts mostly of Democrats.  Just think what that means.  For years now, we have been told that demography is destiny and the Democrat takeover of the American electorate is inevitable.  Instead of moving towards the Democrats in these local elections for the state legislatures, however, Americans have been moving away to a greater and greater extent.  The GOP has over two thirds of the houses!!!

UPDATE:  the number of Republican controlled chambers has climbed to 66 with one still undecided.
