Nancy Pelosi was asked this morning about Jonathan Gruber, one of the main architects of Obamacare who admitted that the law was based on lies needed to get it passed and that this process was made possible by the "stupidity" of the American voters. Pelosi said that she did not know who Gruber is.
Now let's stop here. After days and days of uproar in part of the media about Gruber and his comments, the leader of House Democrats claimed not to know who Gruber is. That means that Pelosi pays not attention to the news. That is bad enough, but then it got a whole lot worse. As soon as Pelosi made this claim, the internet came alive with folks posting excerpts from statements made by Pelosi and claims posted on her website during the Obamacare debate in which Pelosi touted various things that Gruber had said. Pelosi pointed out in 2009 and 2010 that Gruber was the main architect of the law. In other words, Pelosi was instantly shown to be a liar.
That quick response on Twitter and the web led to questions for Pelosi's spokesperson about Pelosi's comments on Gruber. The result was this gem of an explanation from Pelosi's spokesman: the media was told that Pelosi only said that she did not know who Gruber is, not that she never heard of him.
What could anyone add to that response? Both Pelosi and her spokesman make clear that they are spouting nonsensical lies. How can they actually expect to get away with that stuff? Are they counting on what Gruber calls the "stupidity" of the American voters? It certainly seems so.
