Turkey, Turkeys and Turkey Day

Tis the season for Turkeys, that's for sure.  Vice president Biden is in Turkey meeting with the Turkish leader to discuss ISIS, Syria and refugees.  In a lengthy meeting there was no agreement for the Turks to get involved in the fighting against ISIS even though the terrorists are now just across the border from Turkey in Syria.  Turkey still will not even let US planes take off to bomb ISIS forces in Syria and Iraq from bases inside Turkey.  Just to be clear, the bases are American air force installations, not bases for Turkish air power.  Turkey does want the USA to step up its air attacks in Syria, however, but it wants the target to be the Assad forces rather than ISIS.

As Biden was meeting with the Turkish leader, there were protests in Istanbul against Biden's visit.  the protest was not large (perhaps 500 - 1000 people), but the organizers were the same group that attack visiting US sailors who were on liberty in Istanbul a few weeks ago.

So we have an appropriate combination of turkeys and Turks in Turkey.  The Turkish society would be wiped out quickly should ISIS win its battles and then move on to take control in Turkey.  All those secular and Western Turks would meet the same fate as the American journalists who were beheaded by ISIS.  Nevertheless, Turkey will not attempt to stop ISIS in any way.  And as for those student protesters in Istanbul, they would be among the first to die under ISIS.

All these turkeys make me think about Thanksgiving.  I have to start shopping for things we need for the holiday.  I'd rather think about that than about Turkey.
