Message From Oregon

President Obama is back from Asia, and he is about to issue his amnesty order on immigration.  Obama thinks he is doing the right thing politically, but he may well be wrong.  Indeed, if the voters in Oregon are heeded, Obama is leading the Democrats into a disaster.  On election day, Oregon voters decided by a lopsided majority to repeal a new state law that would have given driver's licenses to illegal aliens.  The law was originally passed by the Democrat controlled legislature and signed by the Democrat governor of Oregon.  The repeal measure was not sustained by the Republicans; it was a group of activists who got the question on the ballot.  During the campaign, the groups opposing the repeal measure outspent those who supported repeal by ten to one.  In other words, the repeal of driver's licenses for illegals was passed on the strength of the idea itself; all the money was on the other side.

So what is the message from Oregon?  It seems pretty clear:  the people of liberal, Democrat Oregon do not want those here illegally given the same privileges and rights as American citizens and legal residents.  They want there to be consequences for breaking the law.  I am sure that in Obama's opinion, the message from Oregon is that the sixty percent of people who did not vote all support his views on immigration.  After all, Obama is in denial about the rest of the election, so why not about this ballot question too.  Nevertheless, Obama is playing with fire for Democrats if he issues his amnesty order.

It really boils down to these three points:  1) There is no majority support across America for those here illegally to be rewarded with amnesty.  2)  There is a strong national aversion to the president acting beyond his authority by taking this action around Congress.  3)  If Obama issues his amnesty, this lawless and unpopular action will be hung on the Democrat party for a long, long time.
