Remember all those promises by president Obama that there would be no boots on the ground in Iraq? Well, they are now gone completely. First, Obama sent troops to "guard the embassy". That lasted a week or two. They he sent advisors to train Iraqi troops and to "assess" the situation. That brought the total up to something over 2000 American soldiers. This afternoon, Obama authorized another 1200 or so troops who will be out in the field in the thick of the battle with ISIS. Here is how the AP described it:
A senior military official says that American military advisory teams will now go to Iraq's western Anbar province where Islamic State militants have been gaining ground and slaying men, women and children.
In short, unless the new soldiers are going to be required to go barefoot into battle, there are now American boots on the ground in Iraq again. Anbar province is the heart of ISIS controlled territory. The special forces troops who are being sent there will be in the most dangerous possible place in all of Iraq. If they are caught by ISIS which controls the area, they will undoubtedly be executed.
The move to send American troops to fight ISIS is understandable. Basically, Obama has a choice to use American air power only and to watch the Iraqi forces continue to lose or to use American special operators on the ground and up the effectiveness of the air war to a degree great enough that it can significantly slow ISIS and perhaps force the terror group into retreat. The problem, however, is that rather than announcing to the public that these troops are now being sent, Obama is trying to sneak the news out on a Friday afternoon so that no one will notice. It also means that Obama is sending our troops to Iraq with a very limited ability to back up or rescue any of them who get into trouble. In other words, Obama has the USA troops fighting in a much more dangerous and exposed way than is necessary. It is outrageous that Obama is putting American troops at risk so that he can look better politically for the Democrat base.
