The Senate voted by 59 to 41 in favor of approval of the Keystone XL Pipeline last night. Because of the rules of the Senate, passage required 60 votes, so the measure failed. The House had passed the bill the day before yesterday, but with the Senate defeat the bill is dead for this session of Congress. All 41 of the no votes came from Democrats. All 45 Republicans and 14 Democrats voted yes.
What happened to this bill reveals a basic truth about the Democrats. By large majority, the Democrats care more about the big money donors who oppose the pipeline than they do about the rest of America. All those jobs that the pipeline would create don't matter. Why care about 40,000 construction workers having work for two or three years when it might displease billionaire Tom Steyer? Why care that the added oil production could bring the world price of oil down further which would benefit the American people when the folks with the big bucks are against it?
Now before you tell me that the Democrats voted this way because they are concerned about the environment, you need to remember that Keystone will help the environment. With Keystone, the oil from Alberta will be refined in Texas at the most modern refineries. Without Keystone, the same oil will be refined in China at much less environmentally protective refineries. With Keystone, the oil will be transported safely by pipeline. Without Keystone, oil will travel by train and truck, a much less safe method of transport. Train and truck accidents and leaks are roughly seventeen times more likely than leaks from pipelines. Even the State Department concluded that the pipeline would help the environment.
The truth is that in the Democrat party, big money controls. When the Democrats claim to care about the average American, it is just another of those lies they tell to the stupid American voters.
