Forgetting The American Worker

Over the last six years, the real median household income in the USA has declined.  This statistic, more than any other, tells the story of the Obama economy.  Average Americans who work hard and struggle to make ends meet have lower incomes than they had six years ago.  Even worse than the decline is the undeniable fact that president Obama has done nothing to help those who are struggling with declining incomes.  In fact, Obama and his party keeps taking actions that make things worse.

Few people in the media look at the impact of Obama's latest pronouncement on immigration from the standpoint of how it will affect the average American.  There is endless discussion about bringing the illegal aliens "out of the shadows."  There is also a great deal of debate about whether or not Obama has the power to do what he is doing.  These are not unimportant issues, but they really are less important than the effect which this move will have on the average American worker.

The simple truth is that Obama's move on immigration will work to keep wages and incomes lower than they otherwise would be.  Obama claims that he added five million or so new legal residents to the USA by signing his order the other day.  This includes about 1.5 million children, but it also includes roughly 3 million or more potential new legal workers who can compete for jobs across the country.

Think how three million additional workers will affect the labor force.  Remember that for the first time in years, the USA is adding about 200,000 jobs per month according to government statistics.  At that rate, it will take a year and a quarter to create enough jobs so that the newly legal folks can be employed.  Of course, during that time, there will be many students who graduate from school and many other people who start to look for work.  They will all need jobs too.  What that means is that it will take many years before the huge number of new workers will be able to get jobs.  During that time, all those extra workers will keep wages low.  Employers will not need to raise salaries if there three, four or five workers available for every job opening.

On top of the additional unemployed workers keeping wages down, we also have the huge new costs imposed on government by what the president did.  In many states, legal residents are entitled to various types of benefits.  The newly legal will quickly learn that they can get their payments from their state once they register as required.  That means higher taxes are coming, and those higher taxes will further reduce the take home pay for the average worker.
