Falling For False Narratives

I had a conversation with a friend this morning in which I was told that it would be a disaster were the Republicans to pass a bill to repeal Obamacare in January.  I have to admit that the sentiment surprised me.  After all, most of the congressmen and new senators coming to Washington campaigned on the promise that Obamacare would be repealed, so passing a measure to accomplish that -- even if president Obama vetoes the bill -- is honoring a campaign promise.  To me, the new Republican majorities need not even discuss whether or not to pass such a bill; they are obligated to do just that.

I asked my friend for an explanation of his views.  He told me, in essence, that Obamacare has some "good" parts and that repealing it when a veto was inevitable would be seen as nothing more than obstruction.  The GOP needs a replacement program, he said.  The statement was an eye-opener.  As my friend spoke, I heard the words of some "pundit" on CNN speaking about how the election showed that the country wanted the GOP to work together with Obama to get things done.  My friend had bought into the false narrative being peddled by the Democrats and their media allies with regard to the meaning of the election.

Let's be clear.  The election was a wholesale rejection of Obama and the Democrats.  It was not a wish for the Republicans to come to Washington to help the Democrats accomplish their objectives.  The goal is not to get stuff done; it is to stop more of that stuff from happening.  American voters want to get rid of Obamacare.  American voters want to get rid of restrictions that keep businesses from growing.  American voters want to get rid of tax laws that inhibit job creation.  American voters want to get rid of environmental restrictions that go too far and threaten the livelihoods of individuals, towns or entire regions because it allows rich liberals to feel good about how pro-environmental they are.  American voters want Washington to stop wasting money on programs that accomplish nothing.  In short, American voters want a government that functions properly and competently, that limits itself to the matters normally consigned to the government, and that concerns itself with the good of the country rather than the good of the government.

Under that standard, the first issue facing the new Congress regarding Obamacare is whether or not it is something good for the nation.  Remember, all sorts of new Obamacare mandates, regulations, restrictions and taxes will kick in over the next two years.  Should they be stopped and the entire mess removed before more harm is done?  The voters have said a resounding YES!  If there are provisions that a good, then they can be enacted after the whole mess is removed.  If Congress waits for a replacement to be completed first, then we will all have to endure all of the continuing damage inflicted by the Obamacare statute.

The truth is that result is the very reason why the Democrats and their media allies all talk about this non-stop.  They want the rest of Obamacare to go into effect.  They want the healthcare system to be permanently changed.  They want the remaining portions of the existing system destroyed so that we can never again easily move back towards a more doctor/patient centered system in which government plays a minimal role.

As you watch the news in the coming months, keep this basic truth in mind:  it will be a major blessing for the USA if Obamacare is repealed.  Making the effort to do just that is not obstruction, no matter what CNN or NBC says.  Carrying out the wishes of the American people is a sacred obligation.  It is not political obstruction.
