In a rather interesting moment, every Senate Democrat voted to filibuster the funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security. The House has already passed the funding bill, but the Senate Democrats do not want to allow a vote on it since it also bars any spending by the Department to implement the executive action by president Obama on immigration. So after years of castigating the Republicans for "shutting down the government" each time they opposed some spending measure, the Democrats are now doing just that.
Hopefully, the response from the GOP will be to split the funding bill into two parts. One will fund all of DHS except for the agency that processes the immigration matters. That should be passed with no opposition. The second bill could fund the immigration agency but with the limitations in the current bill. If the Democrats want to cut off all funding for that agency, they can choose to do so by filibustering the bill.
