It's time for president Obama to do something; he has no choice. For once, Obama can't just say something and pretend that he did something. Obama has to move one way or the other on the Keystone XL Pipeline. Congress passed the authorization for that project and its 40,000 construction jobs and sent it to Obama. This week, Obama must sign or veto the bill. Obama has said that he will issue a veto, but with Obama we could be told tomorrow that his thinking on the pipeline has "evolved" and he is signing it.
The problem with Obama's veto is that there is no reason left for such a veto other than as a present to the hysterical environmentalists in his base who do not care about jobs for American workers or about the actual positive environmental impact of the pipeline. (Moving oil by pipeline is much safer and needs much less energy than shipping the oil by rail. Also refining the oil in Texas will be much less polluting than doing so in China.)
Pity Obama. Until now, he's been able to avoid decisions on most things. Probably we'll hear soon that by passing the Keystone bill, Congress was being racist.
