Enough Already

Over the last few days, there has been a minor controversy involving FNC host Bill O'Reilly and Mother Jones "reporter" David Corn.  In an article in Mother Jones, Corn accused O'Reilly of doing a Brian Williams.  According to Corn, O'Reilly claimed to have been in a combat zone during the Falkland War between the UK and Argentina in the 1980s when he was actually in Buenos Aires, Argentina rather than on the Falklands themselves.  O'Reilly responded that he had indeed been in Buenos Aires but that there was a great deal of street fighting in that city when Argentina lost the war to Britain and that it was this fighting that he had meant when talking about a war zone.

Since there was indeed a lot of fighting in Buenos Aires at that time, none of the main media outlets covered the story.  I assume that even liberal outlets like the New York Times also understood the worth of a claim made in Mother Jones, a magazine that sees news more as a political argument than a fact gathering effort.

Last night, O'Reilly showed video of the clashes in Buenos Aires which was released by CBS News.  It showed angry and bloody clashes between the police and army on the one side and the people of the city on the other side.  The clashes were centered on the large square on one side of the Casa Rosada (the Argentine equivalent of the White House).  The video puts to rest any idea that this was not a danger zone filled with fighting.  There are other details, but the point is that the Mother Jones story is wrong.

The funny thing is that the story is still being pushed by some of the most liberal news outlets.  Yahoo News, which is ideologically close to Mother Jones, announced today that the video showed fighting but it left the main questions unsettled.  It is much like saying that a fighter beat his opponent by a knockout in the first round, but it left unsettled the debate as to which one was the better fighter.

It's enough already!  I know the left hates Fox News.  Hey, the White House and the Democrats hate Fox News, so why not the left media as well?  The story, however, has progressed to the point where the Mother Jones contingent looks silly.  They should give it a rest.
