Recruiting Realism

Do you remember how many times you have heard that the US Detention Camp at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba is a major recruiting bonus for the terrorists?  If you pay any attention to national security debates, the number of times must be in the hundreds.  All through the second term of George Bush, Democrats like then senator Obama and others kept repeating this charge over and over again.  America had to close Gitmo because it would deny the terrorists a recruiting tool.  Of course, once Obama won the presidency, he stopped talking about Gitmo as a recruiting tool.  Oh, Obama still wants to close the base, but that is more as a hat tip to the ultra left base of the Democrats than for any strategic reason.

Now we have a new type of terrorist recruiting tool  This time it is not a prison in Cuba or some pictures from a prison in Iraq.  No, now the recruiting tool consists of videos of executions carried out by ISIS thugs.  ISIS beheads an American journalist and thousands of potential jihadis arrive in Syria to join up.  ISIS kills a Brit on video and more terrorists enlist.  Today, ISIS beheaded 21 Egyptian Christians on tape, and most assuredly more members of the Islamic lunatic fringe will be joining up so they too can get in on the orgy of death.

Certainly, the ISIS videos have the effect of motivating the opponents of ISIS.  But those opponents have no leader since our president won't even recognize that we have a genocidal opponent growing out of Islam.  The videos, however, get shown around the world.  The Moslems who are already disgruntled, those who are looking for the "thrill" of killing, and those who are ready to be true believers in the cause then flock to join up.  The latest estimate was that ISIS got just under 30,000 new recruits in the last months.

To be clear, this is not a widely supported cause among the Moslems of the world, but since there are over a billion Moslems, it does not take widespread support for ISIS to raise a large armed group to carry out its genocidal mission.

The best way to stop successful recruiting by ISIS is to kill the ISIS fighters and defeat the cause.  It is one thing to join a group that is killing without opposition but quite another to decide to join a group where most fighters are killed quickly even if they get to murder on occasion.  That result would require a thoughtful and tenacious strategy, something that Obama and his people will never produce.  Right now, we have to hope that ISIS does not gain too much strength before Obama is replaced in 2017.
