Newsweek Magazine, the self-proclaimed journal of liberal opinion is out with a poll of the American electorate that has some surprising results. Poll respondents rated Republicans and Democrats on a number of different issues and prefer the Democrats on all but one. According to the Newsweek poll, voters said they trust Democrats more than Republicans to handle Afghanistan (by 6 points), health care (by 12), immigration (by 2), Social Security (by 14), unemployment (by 12), financial reform (by 14), energy (by 19), education (by 19), federal spending (by 4 points), taxes (by 5), and the economy (by 10). Republicans outpoll Democrats on handling terrorism by a 6-point margin.
These results are completely different from those shown in other polls. Indeed, every other poll I can find shows that voters prefer Republicans on federal spending, taxes and the economy by sizable margins. In many polls, Republicans are prefered on every issue. The Newsweek poll seems to be covering a different electorate from those that the other pollsters have reached.
What accounts for this difference? Newsweek has not released the details of its polling. I just find it strange that the jounal of liberal opinion is the only one whose poll shows an advantage for the Democrats. I would like to think that Newsweek is simply presenting poll results, but I truly wonder if the magazine maybe should change its name from Newsweek to Biasweek.
