Looking Forward

With the end of 2013 fast approaching, it is time to start looking forward to 2014 and the events of that year.  Here is a fast test to measure your ability to predict the future:

1.  During the 2014 elections,
   a.  The Republicans will keep control of the House and take over the Senate as well;
   b.  The Republicans will keep the House and the Democrats will keep control of the Senate;
   c.  The Democrats will take over control of the House and keep control of the Senate; or
   d.  The Democrats will take over the House, but the Republicans will take over the Senate.

2.  By the end of March of 2014,
   a.  More than seven million people will buy new policies on the Obamacare exchanges;
   b.  More than five million but fewer than seven million people will buy policies on the Obamacare exchanges;
   c.  Fewer than five million people will buy policies on the Obamacare exchanges; or
   d.  The Obamacare exchanges will be closed down.

3.  By the end of 2014,
   a.  Iran will have detonated a nuclear device; or
   b.  Iran will not have detonated a nuclear device.

4.  By the end of 2014,
   a.  There will be a new comprehensive immigration reform law passed by Congress and signed into law by the president;
   b.  The House will pass at least one immigration measure but it will not allow that measure to go to conference with the Senate;
   c.  The House will pass multiple immigration measures and will send them to conference with the Senate, but the measure will be voted down in one chamber or the other after the conference report; or
   d.  No immigration bills will pass the House.

5.  By the end of 2014, which of the following people will have announced that they are candidates for president in 2016:
   a.  Chris Christie;
   b.  Hillary Clinton;
   c.  Joe Biden;
   d.  Jerry Brown;
   e.  Rand Paul;
   f.  Marco Rubio;
   g.  Mike Huckabee; and
   h.  Paul Ryan.

6.  During 2014,
   a.  No gun control measures will pass Congress;
   b.  at least two states will pass severe new restrictions on gun ownership;
   c.  at least two states will pass measures to tax gun ownership; or
   d.  president Obama will impose major new gun control restrictions by means of an executive order.

7.  During 2014,
   a.  Chemical weapons will once again be used in Syria;
   b.  The Syrian civil war will continue with at least another 50,000 people killed;
   c.  The Assad regime will be overthrown in Syria and a new jihadist Sunni government installed that will allow Syria to become a base for terror activities;
   d.  The Assad regime will win the civil war in Syria and will round up and slaughter at least 100,000 opponents of the regime after the victory.

8.  During 2014,
   a.  The Israelis and the Palestinians will sign a peace treaty brokered by the USA;
   b.  The peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians will collapse;
   c.  The peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians will continue sporadically, but without measurable progress; or
   d.  The Egyptian army will invade the Gaza Strip to oust the Hamas led government after its involvement in an attempted coup in Egypt is uncovered.

9.  During 2014,
   a.  The Chinese economy will stall and go into recession;
   b.  China will see much slower economic growth than in the past;
   c.  Chinese economic growth will accelerate;
   d.  The Chinese government will be overthrown with resulting temporary economic chaos in China.

10.  During 2014,
   a.  The NSA programs of gathering intelligence data will go on much as in 2013;
   b.  President Obama will announce that he is going to implement the recommendations of his intelligence panel, but then will actually do nothing;
   c.  President Obama will order the NSA to stop gathering phone records, email and other internet data on Americans; or
   d.  We won't know what has happened with the NSA because we will be told that it is all secret.

11.  During 2014,
   a.  The American economy will start to grow at a fast pace so that GDP will increase during the year by more than 4.5%;
   b.  The American economy will stagnate and economic growth for the year will recede back below 1.5%;
   c.   There will be a recession in the USA;
   d.   American economic growth will be in the 2 - 3% range.

12.  During 2014,
   a.  Congress will pass a law requiring new vehicles sold in the USA to be equipped with a device that blocks cell phones from operation within the car/truck except through certain hands free methods;
   b.   Congress will repeal Obamacare;
   c.   President Obama will issue and executive order banning hydraulic fracking within the USA;
   d.   The EPA will ban the burning of coal on the grounds that it contributes to global warming.
