If you want to get a fast idea what is wrong with the White House these days, you should watch the interview with Susan Rice on last night's 60 Minutes. Rice was asked about her participation in the handling of the Benghazi terror attack on the American consulate. You may recall that Rice went on five different Sunday morning talk shows the weekend after that attack and proclaimed that the entire attack was the result of a youtube video that insulted Moslems. According to Rice, the attack had nothing to do with terrorism or any terror group. Of course, this was totally wrong. Either Rice was intentionally lying to America or she was a dupe being used by the White House to engineer a cover up of the failure to provide adequate security in the face of a terror threat. So what does Rice say now? Rice does not even acknowledge the issue. She calls her lying to America a "false controversy". A member of the president's cabinet goes on TV repeatedly and lies to the public, and it is a "false controversy".
The view in the White House that they can get away with stuff like this is the major problem that those folks have. Maybe they think America is just too stupid to understand the reality of the situation. Maybe they think that no one is interested enough to do anything about the lies. Maybe they think that their own supporters are sufficiently delusional that all that needs to be done is to feed these supporters a plausible lie. Worst of all, maybe they believe what they are saying. There is no good reason for such conduct by Rice; there are only bad reasons. But the conduct continues without any correction by the rest of the White House apparatus.
