Here is a short quiz that should tell you a lot about our current situation:
1. Which is worse:
a. being called a sinner; or
b. being called a mass murderer?
2. Which is worse:
a. being called abnormal: or
b. being called a criminal?
3. Which is worse:
a. being told you are not going to heaven: or
b. being called a racist and a bigot?
All three questions show one simple fact: there is a double standard at work in American media and things are not getting better. In question 1, Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty called gays "sinners" in his recent interview. That was reported as a "slur" and a "scandal" in nearly all the mainstream media. In another recent interview, John Podesta, the new councilor to president Obama likened the House Republicans to the Jonestown cult that killed nearly a thousand of their followers in the late 1970s. The mainstream media hardly mentioned that statement. Unlike with Robertson, no one in the media called for Podesta's firing. It was as if the statement was never made. But which statement was worse? Was it Robertson for repeating the teachings of Christianity, or was it Podesta for calling Republicans in the House mass murderers?
In question 2, we have another comparison beween Phil Robertson and prominent Democrats. Robertson said that homosexuals were not normal. Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and the rest of the gang said that Republicans who wanted to defund or delay Obamacare were extortionists, terrorists, and all sorts of other criminals. Which is worse? If you just look at the mainstream media, you would clearly understand that the media thinks that what Robertson said was worse. But was it really?
Question 3 compares something else that Robertson said in his interview, namely that gays and other sinners would not inherit the Kingdom of God, in other words, they would not go to heaven. Compare that to what gets said about Republicans every day on MSNBC where there is a refrain in which the GOP is called racist, bigoted, etc. Which is worse? Why is there so much coverage about what Robertson said but almost none regarding the constant attacks by the people at MSNBC?
Let's focus for a moment on what this all means. First, the response to Robertson's remarks is way out of line. Camile Paglia, who happens to be gay herself, is right; the onslaught from GLAAD and others is best described as fascist or Stalinist. No free people would ever react in that way. Second, the media buys into the entire concept that the left gets to determine what is true and what is not in America. If Robertson repeats the views of his religion, that is rejected by the media as completely untrue. There is no balance; there is only hysteria. If the Democrat leaders say Republicans are terrorists, then that is just to be accepted without question. The idea of an independent press uncovering the truth died in America years ago and was replaced with a public relations agency for the Democrats and the left. Third, the media is so wholly Liberal or leftist that it does not even recognize the true nature of the comments by the Democrats.
There is a good reason why Fox News is able to have ratings that are more than MSNBC, CNN and HLN combined. Most Americans recognize that the bias in the media is so overwhelming that the only place to get both sides of an issue is on Fox. No, this is not a claim that FNC provides equal time to both sides on every issue; no network has ever done that. The difference on Fox, however, is that both sides are actually presented pretty fairly. That is why the Democrats hate Fox so much. After all, instead of acting as a Democrat front, Fox actually reports the news and provides commentary from both sides. It is a breach in the wall of the mainstream media that the Democrat pols just cannot stand.
One last note: I have not really had much to say about Duck Dynasty and Robertson and I am not going to start now. Until the current controversy, I only knew the Duck Dynasty bunch as refugees from a ZZ Top look alike contest. I am more interested in how the media is treating this mess.
