I just read a Politico article that puts on display a truly delusional view of the current scene. According to Politico, president Obama has had a truly wonderful few months that make 2014 his best year in office of the last four. Politico points to the executive directives that "shielded" 5 million people from deportation, the "landmark" climate change agreement with China, the new arrangement with Cuba that "accomplishes" what his predecessors could not do for the last 50 years, and getting the government funded without Obamacare being defunded. I am not making this up.
Look at these supposed accomplishments. Obamacare was already fully funded. The only way to "defund" it would be to pass a bill that removed funding for the program. Is there anyone who actually thought that the Democrat controlled Senate was going to pass such a measure? And if there were, is there anyone who thought that Congress could override the veto of such a defunding measure that Obama would surely have issued? Everyone in Washington knew that Obamacare would be funded. Absent some sort of surprise event, it is going to remain funded even after the GOP has total control of Congress starting in 2015. So there's no "accomplishment" for Obama there.
As for Cuba, Obama did not do what his predecessors could not accomplish. Obama did what his predecessors CHOSE NOT TO DO. Obama gave away all the leverage that the USA had with Cuba and greatly strengthened the murderous Castro regime. In exchange, Obama got nothing for the USA. No "accomplishment" here either.
So what about the China/global warming agreement? China agreed to consider a reduction in greenhouse gases starting in 2030. That's 16 years from now. There is really no country on Earth that would refuse to sign an agreement to consider something in 16 years. It is the proverbial "free shot". It is not a landmark deal unless one considers finding the road to nowhere a "landmark". Once again, no "accomplishment" here.
That leaves the unconstitutional directive on immigration. We have already heard from the Federal Court that what Obama did was unconstitutional. There will be many more innings on that one, but the likely outcome is that Obama's action will be held improper and unenforceable.
Then, of course, there is the matter of the midterm election results. The Democrats suffered their worst defeat in a midterm election in over 80 years because of Obama's policies that "were on the ballot".
So how can Politico write that this has been a good period for Obama? The truth is that this is a report from the heart of the Liberal bubble that exists in Washington, Hollywood, Cambridge and parts of New York. Everyone in the bubble actually believes this stuff. They see the phony China agreement as a breakthrough. The think that stopping opposition to the murderers and terrorists in Havana is a good thing. They never bother to consider reality long enough to recognize failures for what they truly are. It's really sad if you think about it. Mass delusion is never a good thing.
