He Really Is His Father's Son

Senator Rand Paul is someone whose name is mentioned when pundits discuss potential Republican presidential candidates.  There really is no clear reason why that it.  Rand Paul is a first term senator, and that's about it.  Now I know that Barack Obama was a first term senator too, and he got elected president.  Sadly, though, we all know how that one turned out.  I doubt that the nation can survive another failed presidency like Obama's.  Paul does have the family name; he is the son of perennial GOP loser and fringe candidate Ron Paul.  Still, that does not provide any reason for Rand Paul to be president.

I was reminded of the family connection today when I read Paul's comments on Marco Rubio's views on Obama's "opening" to Cuba.  Paul actually called Rubio an isolationist because Rubio did not want to end the isolation of Cuba.  That makes no sense at all.  It would be like calling a member of the KKK who wanted to take civil rights away from some Americans, a "civil rights advocate" because he advocated a position that mentioned civil rights.

This kind of strange and almost semi-comical statement by Paul reminded me of the sort of comments his father used to make in presidential debates.  Paul may disagree with Rubio; that is fine.  For Paul to call Rubio an isolationist, however, is a joke.  I wonder if Paul even knows what an isolationist believes.  If he did, he would be more likely to call himself an isolationist than to call any other Republican that name.
