President Obama is "normalizing" relations with Cuba or at least beginning that process. As usual, Obama took the most dishonest road to get to this result.
Let's start with the lies from the administration. Just last month, the nation was told by the administration that before any actions were taken regarding Cuba, there would be full Congressional involvement. Now we learn that even when that promise was made, Obama was already negotiating with Cuba on this current move. We also learn that the only Congressional involvement came when a few in Congress were told of the impending announcement in the last day. In other words, Obama lied (gasp!). It is not unusual or surprising, but it still is upsetting to see the president of the United States caught in a blatant lie.
Then there is the timing of the announcement. Obama wants us to believe that it is a mere coincidence that his announcement on Cuba is timed to the day after Congress adjourns. Obama waited until all of the members of Congress had left town for the holidays before taking this action with Cuba. Obama knows that if Congress were in town, there would be moves to push back against these moves, but with Congress adjourned until January, it will be too late to do much.
Look, it may be that it is time to reopen relations with Cuba. I don't think so, but it is certainly a subject that merits debate. It is wrong, however, to sneak this change through on the basis of lies. The American people deserve more from their president.
