Last week, the Obama administration leaked the story that it was considering the imposition of sanctions on Israel for building apartments for Jews in Jerusalem. The leak was followed by a refusal by the White House spokesman to deny that sanctions were under consideration. These moves were designed to pressure the Israelis against taking any steps which were not approved in advance by Obama.
So how did it turn out? Within two days, there were all sorts of statements of upset and outrage by both Republicans and Democrats due to Obama's threat of sanctions on an ally. This was particularly troublesome because Obama is simultaneously pressuring the Senate not to impose sanctions on Iran for refusing to give up its nuclear program. The response quickly grew to be too much for the White House. This afternoon, the White House spokesman announced to the media that sanctions had "never" been under consideration. In other words, Obama retreated and looked foolish.
How can it be that our national security is in the hands of such inept people?
