Sending Terrorists to Uruguay

Six detainees at Guantanamo are being "transferred" to Uruguay.  These are terrorists who have been held at Gitmo for many years.  The transfer is part of president Obama's plan to close Gitmo, over the objections of Congress, by just releasing the prisoners.

Let's start with the obvious question:  Why Uruguay?  Think about it.  Uruguay is a lovely country in South America.  It is small, mostly pastoral place with a large capital city of Montevideo.  There has been no Islamic terrorism there.  Sending Islamic terrorists to Uruguay is like sending convicted rapists from California to prison in South Korea.  Simply put, it makes no sense.

Then there is the next question:  what will happen to these six terrorists once they get to Uruguay?  Will they be released?  Supposedly, that is not the case, but the federal government is not really saying what will happen to the men once the transfer is complete.  We do know that the State Department spokesman said yesterday that Uruguay's move in accepting these six men was "humanitarian".  It seems extremely doubtful that a professional spokesman would call putting someone into a different prison a "humanitarian" move.  Most likely, these six terrorists are being freed either now or in the near future.  The idea that Obama would send terrorists to freedom through a ruse just so he can close Gitmo is obscene, but it seems, nevertheless, to be true.

Add into the mix the fact that it has now leaked out that one of the reasons that Chuck Hagel was fired as Defense Secretary is that he would not approve of the transfer of these prisoners to Uruguay.  The story is that the transfer proposal sat on his desk unapproved for nearly a year.  He had to certify that the transfer would not result in increased danger to American forces from these men, and he would not do so.  No wonder he was fired.  Obama never likes to see facts if they disagree with his preconceived ideas.
