Losing Before Entering

It's one of those mysteries of American politics how candidates can manage to lose an election before ever announcing that they are running.  I mean right now there should be nothing but an open field in the 2016 presidential sweepstakes, but the field is narrowing in reality even as I write this.  Consider these examples:

1.  Jeb Bush is said to be considering whether or not to run and he is leaning towards throwing his hat in the ring.  But he already lost, and he may not even realize it.  The other day, Jeb said that he would have to lose the primary to win the election.  What Jeb meant by that weird sound bite was that he would have to take positions opposed by most of the Republican base in order to win the election.  I don't think so!  Jeb's main claims to fame are that he is a Bush and that he was governor of Florida years ago.  His experience in Florida may help him get delegates in that state, but voters elsewhere won't really care about it much.  There is also a fair amount of Bush fatigue in the GOP; a lot of voters will think "not again!"  That is why Jeb's positioning himself as being antagonistic to the Republican base will make it impossible for him to be nominated.  He will be the Jon Huntsman of 2016, and we all know how well 2012 worked out for Huntsman.

2.  Hillary Clinton is also planning her inauguration in 2017.  We can almost hear the wheels turning in her brain as she wonders whether or not she will actually have to dance with Bill at the inaugural balls.  Still, Hillary has managed to take her front runner status and turn it into a lead weight that she has to lug with her in the race.  She's killing herself as she does it.  Just think of how Hillary has dealt with the foreign policy she oversaw as Secretary of State.  In that endless tome of boredom that Hillary tried to palm off as an insight into her years in office, she told the world that she disagreed with president Obama on a variety of foreign policy matters.  Strange, isn't it, that no one ever heard about those disagreements until Hillary decided to run.  We all know that the Clinton machine operates by leaking stories to friends in the press.  If Hillary had actually disagreed with Obama, the whole world would have known.  Then there are all those really idiotic errors that Hillary has been making.  I mean, she is not yet in Biden territory, but remember that she actually told the world that she and Bill were dead broke when they left the White House.  Of course, that ignores the $16 million advance that Bill got for his book, the hundreds of thousands they each got for each speech they gave, etc.  Instead of looking like a president, Hillary has looked more like someone's batty old aunt who can't seem to keep her facts straight as she tells you some bit of family lore.

3.  Mitt Romney has had the sense to keep saying that he is not running for president.  He did it twice, and the result was not good either time.  Everyone knows he won't win; he is just not that good a candidate.  The media keeps pushing a Romney candidacy, however.  Hopefully, Mitt recognizes that he has already lost and won't try again.

4.  Chris Christie used to be a fat loud-mouth from Jersey.  The knock on him was that he was too pushy and hard edged to ever be president.  Then came the bridge scandal.  Christie had nothing to do with the mess according to every investigation thus far, but it really does not matter.  Christie got hammered by the media in a way that did not allow him any sort of ability to respond.  He became a fat, loud-mouthed, lout from Jersey, more mobster than president.  It really was not his doing, but Christie has already lost his chance to be president.

5.  Joe Biden is a special case.  It's not that he has lost his chance to be president recently.  Biden actually was eliminated about thirty years ago.  He is an embarrassment as a vice president and perhaps the best weapons the Secret Service has for keeping president Obama safe.  Despite that, Biden is still busy planning for his run for office in 2016.

I know I said that it is a mystery how these people disqualify themselves.  Then I included Biden in the list.  My mistake!  It's no mystery; it's obvious how Biden managed to disqualify himself.
