Passing In The Night

The old cliché is "two ships passing in the night", and it seems that it might be a good way to describe the current state of the "debate" over president Obama's executive directives to reshape the immigration system of the USA.  For example, there were reports today of a new poll in which a large majority of Americans said that Obama's move would lead to a marked increase in illegal immigration and also that Obama's moves were an improper and unconstitutional end run around Congress.  That was followed by poll results that showed that a majority of voters want a path to citizenship for illegal aliens already here for a while.  According to the televised analysis of these results, the polling questions supposedly show a confused view by America regarding immigration.  Of course, that is not right.  Clearly, Americans think that Obama took the wrong course for at least two reasons:  1) he did not have the power to change the law and acted in an unconstitutional manner; and 2) the changes that he nevertheless made will draw millions more illegals to the USA.  In other words, American voters wanted any action taken by Congress as required by the Constitution and they do not like the basic changes ordered by Obama.  Nevertheless, they still want a system that provides some path to citizenship for illegals who have been here a long time.
