Here's a headline that I saw this evening from the Associated Press:
"Palestinians set deadline for Israeli occupation".
As you may know, there is a move to get the UN Security Council to vote to set a deadline for ending the Israeli control of the West Bank area where most of the Palestinians live. When I read the headline, I thought that the UN had voted and the Israelis had lost. That, however, was not the case. Despite the large headline, the article was about plans possible to introduce a resolution seeking such a deadline. In fact, the article pointed out towards the very end that it was now likely that no such resolution would be offered at all. In other words, no deadline was set. Indeed, no deadline may even be sought.
How can the AP let headlines like this through?
I wonder what will come next? Maybe there will be a headline reading "Terrorism Ended" with a story about how the attack in Pakistan is over. How about a headline reading "Cuban embargo ended" with a story about how president Obama is going to ask Congress to repeal the law putting the embargo in place. Maybe we can see an AP headline that reads: "Oil price soars" with a story about how oil prices fell by $5 per barrel over the last week but some analysts expect that the price will rise a bit tomorrow.
It's a wonder that anyone gets the facts from the media.
