Today, the Obama White House hit a new low, and that is truly saying something major. In the daily briefing for the media, the White House spokesman said that the USA would not negotiate with terrorists the way that Jordan and Japan are doing right now with ISIS. (The likely deal with ISIS involves swapping a terrorist prisoner in Jordan for a captured Jordanian air force pilot and a Japanese journalist.) A reporter from ABC then asked why the Jordan/Japan/ISIS deal would be different from the American swap of five terrorists in exchange for the release by the Taliban of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. The answer came in two parts from Obama's spokesman. First, he said that prisoner swaps normally come at the end of a war and the conflict in Afghanistan was ending. Incredulous reporters then pointed out that the war in Afghanistan was hardly over. The Obama spokesman then came forward with another reason. He said that the Taliban was an "armed insurgency" while ISIS was a "terrorist group."
You really cannot make stuff like this up. The official spokesman for the president of the USA said that the Taliban was not a terrorist group. Really? The Taliban who send suicide bombers into markets in Afghanistan to blow up civilians is not a terrorist group. Really? The Taliban who bomb schools that dare teach young girls to read and write is not a terrorist group. Really? The Taliban who gave al Qaeda a home in Afghanistan where they plotted the 9-11 attacks is not a terrorist group. Really? Remember, it was Obama himself who told us all at great length in 2008 that Afghanistan was the "good" war against real terrorists, while Iraq was a bad war. Now the same Taliban who were terrorists in 2008 are not terrorists anymore. Really?
I cannot imagine a more embarrassing statement coming from the White House than this. It is one thing to avoid using the word Islamic when describing Islamic terrorists, but to reclassify the Taliban as something other than a terror group is just unbelievable.
