More Gold Than Silver

New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was indeed arrested today for allegedly taking over four million dollars in bribes and kickbacks.  If true, the man has been a veritable cash machine.  Instead of using an ATM card, however, Silver has allegedly used the influence of his powerful office to get a huge haul of cash.

The New York Assembly has been controlled by the Democrats for decades, and Silver has controlled the Assembly.  Governors have come and gone, but Silver has been a fixture in Albany.  Nothing could happen in New York without Silver's approval and he allegedly sold that approval.

Hopefully, the New York legislature will remove Silver from office and from his position as speaker.  New York being what it is, however, one can never be sure.  After all, Charlie Rangel had problems resulting from his alleged failure to pay taxes on millions of income, but he remained in office and was re-elected.  Being a Democrat like Silver or Rangel in New York City makes one hard to dislodge.
