Since the start of American bombing of ISIS in Syria, the area under the control of that terrorist group has grown quickly according to a report in the Daily Beast. The only area where ISIS has been stopped is around the town of Kobani on the Turkish border where the Kurdish forces have halted the ISIS advance with help sporadic bombing by American planes. In the rest of Syria, the advance by ISIS continues to swallow large chunks of territory.
Consider, for a moment, the last time that you saw a report in the mainstream media about the situation on the ground in Syria which discussed the broad advance by ISIS. If you are like most people, you have never seen those reports for the simple reason that they really don't exist. The reality is that the goal announced last summer of the USA's destroying ISIS seems to have been abandoned. President Obama told us six months ago that America would use air power against ISIS but that the forces on the ground would be "the vetted Syrian opposition" who would be trained by Americans. Six months later, the number of Syrians trained by the USA is zero. The number of Syrian opposition forces who have been vetted so that training can begin is zero. The process of setting up a means to do that vetting has not begun. In short, there are only two possibilities: (1) after Obama announced the policy in Syria, he immediately abandoned it, or (2) when Obama announced the policy he was just telling lies for political purposes and never intended to train or arm Syrian ground forces.
The problem that Obama's Syria disaster causes is not confined to that country. In Iraq, the ISIS forces have been confronted by both the Kurds and the Iraqi army to a lesser extent. With their Syrian bases unthreatened, however, the ISIS forces are able to concentrate their army in Iraq for additional clashes with America's allies. Any chance of success against ISIS in Iraq is greatly reduced because Obama has no coherent policy in Syria.
It really is time that Obama stopped telling lies and started deciding on an actual policy for confronting ISIS in Syria.
