The Military Truth

As I write this, there is an enormous headline on the Drudge Report linking to a piece in the Military Times on a poll taken of active duty forces.  The results are staggering.  By a margin of 55 to 15, the armed forces personnel think that president Obama is not doing a good job as commander in chief.  That 15% approval rating is much, much lower than the opinion of the country as a whole.  Sure, Obama's approval has been in the high 30s or the low 40s for the last six months, but it has never approached 30% and certainly was never close to 15% as is the case with the soldiers and sailors.  The men and women who have to carry out Obama's directives to the military reject Obama in massive numbers.

There are two facts which make this poll result even more amazing.  First of all, America's armed forces consist of roughly 25% minorities.  In the country as a whole, this group gives Obama more support than disapproval.  Among African Americans in the general population, Obama gets approval numbers in the range of 80%, but in the military, that approval among African Americans collapses.  Second, this is the first time that a president has ever had disapproval numbers anything like those found in this poll.  The normal response from the military is to support their commander.
