Knowing the Enemy

I was struck by this opening paragraph in a report by Bloomberg news today:

France’s Front National leader Marine Le Pen pinned the blame for the killing of 12 people in Paris yesterday on Islamic radicals, as mainstream leaders tried to downplay the religious dimension of the attack.

The essence of the report was that the Front National stands to benefit from the terror attack in Paris while the establishment leadership of France worries about the possibility that the French public will blame Muslims for that attack.  This, in a nutshell, makes absolutely clear what is wrong with progressive/socialist thought in the West.

Consider the relevant facts.
1.  A magazine was attacked and its staff killed for publishing articles and cartoons that "insulted the prophet Mohammed".
2.  The attack was carried out by Islamic fanatics who shouted "Allahu Akhbar" while killing innocent people.
3.  The attackers made clear that the motivation for their actions was totally religious.

Now consider the response of the leftist leaders and intelligentsia.
1.  Bloomberg talks of the Front National and Marine Le Pen as if they were clearly wrong to blame the attack on Islamic terrorists.  In other words, the media makes clear that it is wrong for anyone to tell the truth about the attack.
2.  The French president and many of the country's political leaders are busy avoiding mention of the Islamic connection to the attack.
3.  This sort of response is not limited to France.  Last night on his show, Conan O'Brien took a minute to lament the "tragedy" that led to the deaths of twelve people in France who were staff at a satirical magazine.  OBrien said that some of what had been printed in the magazine had "upset some groups".  In one statement, O'Brien managed to avoid mentioning that this was a terrorist attack that resulted in murder and that the group that had been offended was Moslem terrorists.  He could have been talking about a traffic accident with multiple fatalities.

The reality is that we have to know just who our enemy is.  They are Islamic fundamentalist terrorists.  We are not attacking them.  If they want to live under sharia law in an Islamic country, that is their business.  They, however, are attacking us.  The sooner we recognize this reality and return to dealing with it rather than trying to hide it in the name of "understanding" or avoidance of Islamophobia, the better.  And to be clear, it is not Islamophobia to point out that the murderous thugs who killed innocents around the world and in Paris yesterday are Moslems.  That is just basic truth.
