Manbij, Syria is a small city that has been controlled by ISIS for years now, but not anymore. ISIS fighters were ousted from Manbij in a battle that has lasted weeks. It is now under control of non-ISIS Syrian rebels and Kurds. The civilians who remained in the city have been rescued. As I write this, the city is being swept to find ISIS sleeper cells or mines/bombs left behind by the retreating ISIS forces.
The capture of Manbij is much more important than just the takeover of this small city. Manbij and surroundings is one of the few areas left through which ISIS can get to the border between Syria and Turkey. Closing off this area to ISIS means that it will be that much harder for ISIS to get new recruits and supplies. It will also mean that the ISIS capital of Raqqa is cut off on another side.
It's so rare to report good news from Syria, but this certainly qualifies as such. The sad thing is that this city could have been taken from ISIS many months ago if the USA had been serious about focusing on the defeat of the terrorists.
