Hillary Clinton had a rally in St. Petersburg, Florida, and only 171 people showed up. Earlier she had a rally outside Orlando and also had a tiny crowd. (That's the rally where the father of the Orlando terrorist was invited by the Florida Democrats and sat on the stage.) Normally, crowd size is not a big deal in presidential campaigns. The rallies of presidential candidates are always well attended. Hillary, however, seems to have trouble filling anything bigger than a small room. What does this mean?
One answer is that the lack of enthusiasm for Hillary means nothing. I don't buy that. The truth is that the tiny crowds are just another indication of how little America cares for Mrs. Clinton. If she wins in November, it will only be because she is NOT Donald Trump and not because she IS Hillary Clinton. It seems as if people are saying that it's enough to have to vote for Hillary, but they don't want to have to actually go and hear her speak.
These tiny crowds also indicate that the race is far from over despite the drumbeat from the media that Trump is being crushed. If Trump stays on message and gets past the obstacle course that the media has set for him, it won't be hard to draw away support from Hillary. There are plenty of people who are planning now to vote for her who really don't like her. Those are voters ripe for the picking by Trump.
Meanwhile, the crowds at Trump events keep getting larger. It doesn't mean Trump will win, but it does mean that his voters are more likely to vote on election day than Hillary's. If the race is close, that could be the difference between victory and defeat.
