As I write this, hundreds of thousands of people in Louisiana are suffering from the effects of major flooding centered on Baton Rouge. According to the Red Cross, this is the worst natural disaster to hit the USA since hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast in four years ago. I've worked in flood recovery; I know what it's like for people whose homes have been filled with water. Everything has to go even if the house is still standing. Floors and walls and all the contents need to be replaced. Not only does the water damage things, but it also carries all sorts of pestilence that require that nothing can be saved. People in the affected area are literally wiped out; they lose everything.
In the midst of all this suffering, what is president Obama doing? The answer is that he is off on vacation on Martha's Vineyard. Today, Obama played golf with Larry David, the comic who played Bernie Sanders on Saturday Night Live. David made senator Sanders into a crotchety geezer whose most likely comment was "get off my lawn, you kids." Even so, David's version of senator Sanders had more compassion for those in need than Obama is showing now. Obama hasn't gone to Louisiana to see the situation and show the people down there that the country cares about them. That is bad enough. Even worse, though, is the fact that Obama hasn't even bothered to take the time to make a statement on TV about these floods. Something like 100,000 people are homeless and Obama can't even interrupt his golf game to tell them that they are not forgotten and that they will get help. It's truly despicable.
Tonight, at his rally in North Carolina, Donald Trump said that he and Mike Pence are going to Louisiana tomorrow to show solidarity with those who are suffering. It's a nice touch from Trump, particularly since Hillary Clinton, like Obama, cannot be bothered to care about the folks around Baton Rouge. The problem, however, is that the one who needs to go there is Obama. He's the president, not just a candidate.
Obama really is lower than low. He cannot be gone from the White House soon enough.
