The head of the terrorist group Hezbollah announced today that the fighters of that organization are in Syria in combat on the side of the Assad regime. This was a fact well known throughout the world, but previously denied by Hezbollah. It seems that there were just too many Hezbollah soldiers dying and being wounded for the ruse to be continued. On this basis, what the Hezbollah leader, Nasrallah, said was not worthy of comment. The rest of his speech, however, was most instructive and merits discussion.
According to Hezbollah, the people fighting Assad are "Sunni extremists" who are acting at the behest of America and Israel. Let's take that apart: the rebels are Sunni terrorists like al Qaeda who are acting in league with America and Israel.
We all know that these charges are insane. Perhaps from now on, we should just refer to this guy as "Nutjob Nasrallah." What the charges mean, however, is not crazy. Clearly, Hezbollah is indicating that the sectarian split between Sunni and Shiite has come to the fore in a way not usually seen. Remember, Shiite Iran has for years given sanctuary to parts of Sunni al Qaeda. With the confrontation in Syria, will the mullahs in Teheran arrest the al Qaeda forces hiding in Iran? It certainly is possible. And will the new sectarian split give rise to even more killing in the name of Allah in Syria? Death is certainly part of war, but if each side is killing apostates and heretics, the scope of the organized murder is enlarged. Are we soon going to see whole villages murdered when they are captured by the opposing side? It certainly is going that way.
We also need to remember that many of the Moslems in Lebanon are Sunni although they are in the minority unlike in Syria. Will Hezbollah begin hitting the Sunnis in its own country as well as in Syria? Will the Sunni Moslems in Lebanon begin attacking the Shiites? This too is coming.
