Moving the IRS Timeline Again

It seems that each day I have multiple posts about the ever changing timeline regarding the targeting by the Obama IRS of conservative groups and individuals.  As of a few hours ago, the latest story was that the Deputy Secretary of the Treasury learned of the misconduct and told the White House Counsel about it in late April of 2013.  That led to the White House Chief of Staff learning of the matter almost the same day.  Well, not any more!

The Secretary of the Treasury, Jack Lew testified today before the Senate Banking Committee.  Lew took office as Secretary on the last day of February.  He stated today under oath that he was briefed on March 15th about the investigation by the Inspector General's office into the targeting by the IRS of conservative organizations and individuals and that he was told that there might be "troubling findings."  Lew then said that he did nothing about the matter.  Let's make sure we have a clear understanding of what the Secretary of the Treasury said.  He was told in Washington-speak that the IRS was targeting political oppnents of the president and he did nothing, NOTHING about it.

Let's stop the story for a moment to consider an important point about the Secretary of the Treasury.  Before taking office as Secretary, Mr. Lew was the Chief of Staff for president Obama.  There is no person in Washington with better and closer connections to the White House than Jack Lew.  He wants us to believe that he was told the explosive news that the IRS was targeting Obama's enemies for persecution and that he did NOTHING about it.  He took no action to stop the practices at the IRS.  He told no one at the White House about what was happening.  He just decided to let the fuse on this incredibly important bit of political dynamite burn down until it exploded.  THERE IS NO WAY THIS IS TRUE!!!

Now back to the story that Lew is telling.  On May 10, Lew learned of the practices at the IRS concerning the treatment of conservative groups and individuals.  Lew says he was outraged, truly outraged!  Still, he did nothing about any of this.  On May 15th, when the details came out he was again outraged.

Think about this.  Lew is the Secretary of the Treasury.  The IRS reports to him.  He claims that he learns on May 10 that the IRS is indeed persecuting conservatives for their political beliefs, but he does nothing.  While it is possible that Lew would not lift a finger to help conservatives, it is inconceivable that Lew would not act to protect his own behind as well as that of president Obama.  Lew is asking us to believe that he is not the consumate Washington insider and that, on top of that, he is politically tone deaf.  That is just not the case.

What today's testimony really means is that on March 15th, Jack Lew knew what was going on at the IRS.  He undoubtedly warned the White House about it immediately.  Neither the Obama White House nor the Treasury Department took any steps to stop the practice.  Instead, they have been engaged in a cover up of major proportions.  Instead, they have been stonewalling.

One last note:  Lew also said that when he was White House Chief of Staff he learned of the investigation into misconduct at the IRS.  He learned of that investigation in October of 2012, and he knew of the questions that had been raised by members of Congress and Senators during the months prior to that date.  Are we to believe he did not tell president Obama last October in the month prior to the election?  Are we to believe that Lew let Obama go into three debates with Mitt Romney unprepared to answer a question on this issue should it arise?  Again, this is inconceivable.

INCONCEIVABLE!
