We Need a Special Prosecutor

The IRS scandal has been changing hour by hour today.  Here are just a few of the developments:

1.  We now know that the IRS was not just giving conservative groups a hard time on applications for tax exempt status.  No, the IRS was taking the information gathered from these groups and sending it on to a left wing group called ProPublica which then made much of the data public.  That release of information is a federal crime and it was done in response to a request from ProPublica for the data.  ProPublica is funded by a George Soros foundation.  ProPublica knew that release of the IRS data was in violation of the law, but it just took the illegally released data and used it until the story of the IRS' conduct broke.  Now, ProPublica is trying to make itself look like a good guy by admitting that it was sent the info.

So, we know that the IRS and probably ProPublica broke the law.

2.  We also now hear that groups that were formed to defend the family and to fight gay marriage also had their confidential information released.  This is being denied still by the IRS.

3.  We know that president Obama lied when he said on Friday that he had just first heard about the IRS mistreatment of conservative groups last Friday from the news media.  This afternoon, Jay Carney admitted that the White House was aware for the last two years of complaints from members of Congress about the IRS conduct but he claimed that no one bothered to do anything about it.  Then he added that the White House had been fully aware of the forthcoming report from the Inspector General showing the misconduct at the IRS for at least "the last few weeks".

This means that Obama is either completely out of the loop on these issues, or he knew all about them long before Friday.  Given the explosive nature of the charges, it is inconceivable that Obama's staff decided to keep him in the dark.

4.  Other groups are also coming forward with charges about the IRS conduct.  We hear that charitable Jewish groups that support Israel were actually told that there tax exempt status would not be forthcoming if it were determined that they did not support the Obama policies on the Middle East.

A TV broadcaster who did a hard interview with Obama in 2012 now states that right after that happened, he started getting bombarded by the IRS with all sorts of "problems" which he is still sorting out.

5.  Using the IRS for political purposes is a serious federal crime.  Using the IRS to help in the president's re-election campaign is something that cannot fairly be investigated by the people in the administration.  It is essential that we get to the bottom of what happened here and punish those who misused the IRS.  America cannot tolerate those who would destroy our liberties in order to gain political advantages.  There must be a special prosecutor appointed.

We still do not know if Obama was actually aware that the IRS was being used in this way.  Obama denies it, not surprisingly.  But we just do not know.

We still do not know if the Treasury Secretary or the Obama campaign staff or the White House staff or the leadership of the IRS knew what was going on.  Those who let this practice continue are guilty of misconduct and may be guilty of a federal crime.

We need a special prosecutor and we need that appointment NOW!
