It's hard to put into words just how bizarre this news item is: It seems that the terrorist group Hamas which rules the Gaza Strip announced that while it does not want war with Israel, it would not tolerate aggression by the Israelis. Hamas called upon the countries that had helped negotiate a cease fire to end the 2014 war in the region to try to stop Israel from continuing the skirmishes.
Now let's look at what actually happened.
1. Over the last ten weeks, Israel has discovered multiple tunnels coming underground from Gaza into Israel. These are the same sort of tunnels that Hamas used in 2014 to attack Israel by having its soldiers go under the border in order to reach undefended civilians in Israel. The tunnels had been built by Hamas since 2014 and the terrorists had taken concrete and other supplies away from materials intended for construction of homes to do so.
2. Not surprisingly, the Israelis destroyed the tunnels which came into their territory. This was done with explosives and no one was injured. In addition, the Israelis deployed what they call "engineering vehicles" that are equipped to locate underground tunnels. These tunnels are 40 to 50 feet underground, so they are not easy to find.
3. As the Israelis searched for the tunnels, Hamas had its troops periodically fire mortars at those engaged in the search for the tunnels. This shelling went on for about two weeks without any major Israeli response.
4. Yesterday, Hamas unleashed a particularly large barrage against the Israeli troops looking for the tunnels. No one was hurt, but the barrage was a major escalation by Hamas in its attacks on the Israeli troops.
5. In response to the Hamas attacks, Israeli warplanes bombe four sites in Gaza. Each one was a military target where Hamas located its soldiers and weapons.
So, after weeks of attacks from Hamas, Israel responded and Hamas immediately branded the response "Israeli aggression".
How dumb does Hamas think the world actually is? The Hamas position is like claiming that the 9-11 attacks were American aggression against the Moslem world.
