Yesterday, we learned that neither of the Bushes who have been president nor George Romney will be going to the Republican convention. We also heard from the Speaker of the House that he is not yet ready to endorse Donald Trump. I understand why the Bushes are staying home. I don't like it and think it is a rather petty move from two former presidents, but I understand that they don't like that Trump clobbered Jeb Bush to get the nomination. Romney, on the other hand, is just annoyed that the party ignored him and chose Trump despite Romney's efforts to the contrary. I'm sure that Romney is also annoyed that Trump has (truthfully) called Romney a terrible candidate in 2012. Remember Trump supported Romney in a major way, but it was Romney who ran a poor campaign in that election. Romney really owes it to the party to suck it up and support the current nominee.
The Bushes and Romney are unimportant, however, compared to what Paul Ryan did. Ryan's move is unforgiveable in my view. He is both the Speaker as well as the Chair of the upcoming GOP convention. If he did not want to endorse Trump, he could easily have said that until the nominee is actually selected he had to remain neutral as the convention chair. That would have been silly, but it would have avoided the spectacle of what he actually did. Next January, it's time for a new Speaker.
