Yesterday, I wrote about the secret deal to balance the budget which the state legislature was about to vote on. No one other than a few Democrats in Hartford knew the content of the deal, but it was to be enacted within an hour or two of being finalized. It was a disgraceful move by the governor and his fellow Democrats in the legislature.
Clearly, I was not the only one who thought this conduct outrageous. The Democrats bowed to public pressure and put off a vote on the package until the middle of next week. That will give people a chance to learn what is in the package at least. That's not completely true, however, because the package as now disclosed gives the governor the right to cut nearly 100 million dollars out of the budget at his discretion. Governor Malloy could take the entire amount from places that will curtail needed state services or he could cut symbolic agencies that do little for the people of the state. We won't know which even after this passes.
Nevertheless, at least the delay in the vote was a move in the right direction.
