One thing that I've notice from the little bit of the Olympics that I've watched this week is that athletes, particularly ice skaters, no longer seem to come from the countries which they represent in the games. The gold medal pairs skaters who won for Germany were born in Ukraine and France, for example. There were many other similar examples.
I thought of this today when I saw that Mitt Romney is running for the senate seat in Utah. Remember Mitt? He grew up in Michigan where his father was a car company executive and then governor of the state. He moved to Massachusetts and eventually became governor there. Then he ran for president twice. At that time, Mitt claimed to be from New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Now, he's running to represent Utah. Utah? Really? I mean Mitt got involved with the Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City in 2002. He took over as head of the organizing committee and brought some order to the chaos that had been there. But Mitt is not from Utah. I'm not even sure if he lives there now or if he just has an address that he uses to meet the residency requirements for November's election.
It may be that because Mitt was involved with the Winter Olympics all those years ago, he thinks that he can represent another state like many of the athletes who choose to represent another country. I wonder what the people of Utah will think.
