There's another step towards a new war in the Middle East. The Iranians have built a base for their forces in Syria just northwest of Damascus and filled it with medium range missiles capable of hitting nearly all of Israel. This is just the sort of provocation that led the Israelis to destroy a prior Iranian base near Damascus. The Israeli government has made clear that it will not allow Iran to establish bases inside Syria for use against Israel. Obviously, the base has been under construction for many months, but news of it has only recently become public when satellite pictures of the base were shown on Fox News.
It seems most likely that we will soon see some sort of Israeli strike against this base. No doubt, the Syrian/Iranian alliance will also use its anti-aircraft systems to try to take down the Israeli jets. That will lead to Israeli counterstrikes against those systems. That is what happened just a few weeks ago when the Iranians sent an armed drone into Israeli airspace. After that clash, things quieted down. We will have to see if that is once again the result. Let's hope so.
