It's pretty strange to see some of the results from the most recent polls on generic congressional candidates. Those are polls that ask whether if the election were today, one would vote for the Republican or the Democrat candidate. The latest result comes from the YouGov polling group. It has the Democrats leading by 2% in this poll. That's quite close compared to some other recent results. One reason may be that this poll is conducted only by online interviews. No one answering the poll has to tell a live person that they are voting for Donald Trump's party; there is complete anonymity. This close result is not the most surprising part of the poll. That honor belongs to the results found among Hispanic voters. According to the poll, Hispanic voters favor the Republicans by a margin of 35% to 33% with 29% undecided. If the results in November actually are that the Republicans beat the Democrats in votes by 2%, there will be a landslide in favor of the GOP.
The Hispanic results seem wrong in light of all the recent years of results that show Hispanics voting Democrat. Who knows, however, maybe the straightforward offer by President Trump to resolve the DACA issue and the needed changes to immigration policy attracted enough Hispanics to break the Democrat stranglehold on this voting group. If that is the case, it will doom the Democrats to minority status for at least the next few elections.
Of course, this may be nothing more than some bad poll results.
