We're being told that the Senate leadership has reached a compromise on spending for the rest of this fiscal year and next year too. The details are sketchy, but it seems that the Defense Department will get about an extra 150 billion dollars, domestic programs will get a large amount too, but less than Defense, and disaster relief will get about 80 billion dollars. The debt ceiling will be raised as well.
Is this a good deal? It's too soon to tell in my opinion. I want to know what the extra domestic spending comes to and what it is for. I also want to see just how the spending increases will be reached. Have the sequestration caps been abolished or are they just suspended? There are just too many questions to understand the parameters of the deal.
Of course, the senators want to approve the bill and have the House approve it too by tomorrow night. Nothing like the usual Washington rush to deprive the American people of a chance to understand what Congress is doing.
