In a recent statement, America's ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, called upon the Palestinian leadership to stop making incendiary statements like those in a recent speech given by the head of the Palestinian Authority, president Abbas. Now, the leader of the Palestinian "negotiating team" for the non-existent peace talks has responded and just proved Haley's point.
Saeb Erekat who is also Secretary General of the PLO told Haley to "shut up." He said Haley was "impudent" and that she had called for "removing Abbas from power". Erekat accused Haley of fomenting a coup against the "democratically elected" leader of the Palestinian people.
Now let's stop here for a moment. Haley didn't call for the removal of Abbas, so Erekat is wrong. Further, Abbas was elected to a four year term but that was ten years ago. When his term ended, Abbas just blocked new elections and stayed in power. That was Abbas seizing power in his own coup against democracy. Abbas is anything but the "democratically elected" leader of the Palestinians.
Erekat went on to condemn strongly Haley, President Trump and the USA for its positions regarding peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Then, in some unintended comic relief, Erekat said that the Palestinians were "not looking for a fight" with the USA.
