In the never ending stream of negative news and Fake News from the mainstream media about the Trump administration, the newest item truly takes the cake. This past week the State Department designated the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization. ABC is now speculating that this move was just laying the groundwork for a war with Iran. See, the Authorization for the Use of Military Force passed after 9-11 in 2001 grants congressional approval to military action against terrorists. That's not a precise description of what exactly that AUMF covers, but it's close enough. ABC reports that "experts" are worried that the designation of the IRG as terrorists is meant to bring any military action against that force under the umbrella of the authority granted by the AUMF. In other words, ABC is warning that President Trump is preparing for war with Iran and that any such war would likely be of questionable legality.
You have to hand it to ABC News. They come up with some of the goofiest Fake News imaginable. This one is truly bizarre.
Let's start with the IRG. This organization supported al-Qaeda for many years and continues to do so. It also supports the terror group Hezbollah. It supports the terrorists of Hamas. It has directly supplied roadside bombs to terrorists who fought against the US in Iraq. It has carried out terror attacks around the world on non-American targets. For example, in the early 1990's agents from the IRG blew up the Jewish Community Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina killing nearly 100 people. In other words, the IRG is a terrorist organization.
The State Department is required by law to designate groups as terrorist organizations as they are uncovered. Until this past week, no organizations were designated that were parts of nations, but that doesn't make the latest designation incorrect. It is, as Secretary Pompeo said, just recognizing the reality of the situation.
There is nothing that suggests that President Trump wants a war with Iran. What he wants, instead, is clear. He wants to pressure the Iranians into actually giving up their nuclear weapons program. He wants to do what president Obama failed to do when he signed the accord with Iran that let gave the Iranians a ten year glide path to having nukes. It's also pretty clear that the last thing the President is looking for is another war for US forces in the Middle East. He has managed in two years to destroy ISIS. As a result, the President wants to bring US forces home from Syria. (It's worth noting that when Trump announced a withdrawal from Syria, ABC News was apoplectic about it.)
The media has to try taking the things that the Trump administration does at face value on occasion. They denounce the administration as dolts and incompetents at the same time that they warn us about the complicated and sophisticated deceptions that these evil geniuses are foisting on the nation.
The simple truth is that the IRG is and has been for a long time a terrorist organization. The only difference is that the State Department is now willing to say the truth.
