The magnetic field that surrounds Earth is weakening at an accelerating rate. Before you start thinking about climate change, let me be quick to tell you that humans have nothing to do with this. The magnetic field is the result of the spinning of the core of the Earth. That core is heavily made of iron and the motion sets up a magnetic field which protects our planet from solar radiation and other high energy particles. Over the past millions of years, the field has occasionally weakened and then the poles flipped and the field strengthened again. No one knows exactly what will happen in that event, however. It could mean extinction for all manner of beings or it could even be the end of life on earth as we know it. That is because if the field is gone for a while, the force of the solar radiation could strip the atmosphere away from our planet. Even if the field is just weak for a while, the levels of radiation hitting people around the world would increase dramatically. Cancer levels which are already high could soar. Indeed, the rise in cancer currently seen could be mostly the result of the increase in radiation to which we are already being subjected.
Don't let this concern you, though. There is nothing that we can do about it and scientists say that anything like this is unlikely to happen for a long, long time.
