It's one of those things that only the mainstream media and the crazy Democrats could care about. The Washington Post published a story today that says that over the last six months, there were two occasions in the White House discussing if all the overflow asylum seekers among the illegal aliens could be released in sanctuary cities. As things stand now, there are so many illegals seeking asylum that some have had to be released rather than held in detention. Since the sanctuary cities announced how they want to protect these people, why not place them in those cities?
Here's the key point though: the White House decided that it would not accept this proposal and it didn't do any further study of it. It was dead issue for months until the Washington Post wrote about it today.
The WaPo, of course, covered the story as if the plan was about to be implemented. You had to read through a full, lengthy story before you got to a sentence at the end saying that the plan had been looked at and quickly rejected. The other media apparently didn't bother to read that far because they covered the story as if the plan was happening now. Then the Democrats started to denounce the plan. So we had a story about a discussion many months ago which was rejected, and the media and Democrats turned it into a lie about an imminent plan to use the illegals seeking asylum to attack sanctuary cities.

Due to the fact that Democrats are unwilling to change our very dangerous immigration laws, we are indeed, as reported, giving strong considerations to placing Illegal Immigrants in Sanctuary Cities only....The Radical Left always seems to have an Open Borders, Open Arms policy – so this should make them very happy!
For the President, this is a win-win. The Democrats/media have already come out in force attacking him for a plan to put illegals in sanctuary cities. That means that the Democrats/media don't want those illegals there. It has to. If they do want the illegals there, then there's no reason to oppose such a plan. On the other hand, if the Democrats/media now say that they do want the illegals in the sanctuary cities, then what in the world were they doing attacking Trump for considering something that they were happy doing?
The reality is that it would be a good lesson to many of the wealthy who used to be called "limousine liberals" if all these illegals were dumped into their neighborhoods. These people always want to "help" so long as it doesn't affect them or their lives. Let them realize just how big a problem this truly is.
