In another harbinger of things to come, Democrat John Spratt who represents the fifth district of South Carolina has agreed to cebate his Republican opponent on the condition that there can be no recording devices of any sort in the room. That's right, Spratt is so concerned about the content of the debate, he wants to limit the audience only to the 200 or so folks who can fit in the Lions Club meeting where the debate will be held. It looks like Spratt does not want further publicity of his votes with the Pelosi-Reid crowd in Washington.
For what it is worth, Spratt has represented the district since 1982. Even so, after 28 years in the seat, he was ahead in the last poll taken (in January of 2010) by only 7%. One has to assume that the race has moved in favor of the Republican since then. Real Clear Politics lists this seat as a tossup. Larry Sabato also has the race as a tossup.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why spratt would take such an easily-ridiculed position. Does he think that word of it will not get out? It really makes him look bad in my opinion.
