There's a Bad Moon Ricin

If you would like to see the scariest line in all of today's news, it is this one from the Daily Beast:

As the White House mulls whether Syria has crossed President Obama’s red line and used chemical weapons, the U.S. military and intelligence community are quietly acknowledging that the United States does not know where many of those weapons are located.

I do not know if this is accurate or if it is just a story put out by the White House to justify American inaction in Syria.  I do know, however, that if this is accurate, then it is a disaster.  Remember when president Obama wanted to stop calling events terror attacks and instead his people suggested the name "man caused disaster"?  This would be an Obama caused disaster.

Let's examine the consequences of our losing track of Assad's chemical weapons.

First of all, Assad has some pretty awful stuff in his chemical arsenal.  The weapons used in the last few weeks has been sarin gas.  This is fast acting and nearly always fatal.  It could kill thousands with just small doses.  There are other nerve agents and poisons in the Assad bag of chemical goodies as well.

Second, Syria is now filled with all sorts of folks who would like to hurt America and its allies.  We have Assad himself who is now essentially a puppet of the Iranian mullahs.  Without help from Teheran, Assad's days are numbered.  The Iranians would like only too much to see the chaos of a chemical attack inflicted upon America, particularly if they could maintain deniability by having the attack come from a Syrian source.  On the other side of the civil war, we have the al Nusra jihadists who are an arm of al Qaeda.  We all know what al Qaeda wants.

Third, if America has not kept track of where the Syrian chemical weapons are, it would not be difficult to smuggle these weapons into the USA.  What is to stop Assad or al Qaeda from putting the chemical shells on a freighter bound for America only to explode the shells once they reach port.  Imagine what happens if there is a chemical attack at the port of Baltimore or Houston or Long Beach.  When thousands die, should we be satisfied to watch Obama call in the FBI to find and punish the perpetrators (after they get their Miranda warnings, of course).

Two years ago, American intelligence knew where the Syrians kept their chemical weapons.  It was a matter of major concern.  Indeed, this is the reason why Obama told Assad that Syria would cross the red line if the chemical weapons were moved around.  Obama did not even require use of the weapons to get to the red line.  Of course, that was before Obama threw in the towel and said "nevermind".

How can it be that our national security is in the hands of people so unconcerned about chemical weapons that they just let the Syrian chemical arms cache be moved to unknown locations.  This is a dramatic failure by Obama and his national security team.  Will it take a chemical attack on the United States for the media and the public to realize this?
