The latest polls from New Jersey indicate that governor Chris Christie will win re-election by a margin approaching two to one. This blowout could possibly carry enough votes down the ballot to give New Jersey Republicans control of the legislature for the first time in a great many years. The unfortunate thing, however, is that Christie's strength will do little to help in Washington. Yesterday, Cory Booker won the special election for the senate seat left open when Frank Lautenberg died. That senate election was surprisingly close given that Booker is a high profile Democrat and his opponent was a low profile GOP former mayor of a small city
The truth is that Chris Christie deserves a full measure of blame for Booker's win. Christie could have saved the state millions of dollars by just holding the senate election in two weeks concurrently with the general election. With a smashing victory at the top of the ticket, Christie might have been able to swing the senate race so that the Republican won. Christie, however, did not want to take any chances that Booker's presence on the ballot might reduce Christie's margin of victory. There is no chance that Christie might lose, just that his margin might be smaller. It seems clear that all that concerned Christie was his own future. We ought to remember that when he tries to run for president in the next election. (I have to admit, the image of Christie running for anything other than a fourth donut is one that seems hard to imagine.)
