President Obama is going to nominate Jeh Johnson as the new Secretary of Homeland Security. Since it is unlikely that anyone reading this entry ever heard of Johnson, let me tell you that he was the general counsel of the Department of Defense for the first four years of the Obama administration. Somehow Obama thinks that this experience makes Johnson a good candidate for the job. You know, there are terrorists trying to attack the homeland; let's bring in a lawyer. The security at the airports is slow but still porous; let's bring in a lawyer. Cooperation between local police and federal agencies is not up to snuff; let's bring in a lawyer.
The truth is that having a lawyer as the new Secretary is an idiotic move. Remember, this guy is not a lawyer who then moved on to another sort of career. Johnson is a lawyer who has worked as a lawyer ONLY. There is no way that this guy ought to be secretary of DHS.
